The classic Christmas tale in an elegant new vertical trim size, with completely new notes from the author and the illustrator and a CD narrated by James Earl Jones.

Jonathan Toomey is the best woodcarver in the valley, but he is always alone and never smiles. No one knows about the mementos of his lost wife and child that he keeps in an unopened drawer. But one early winter's day, a widow and her young son approach him with a gentle request that leads to a joyful miracle. The moving, lyrical tale, gloriously illustrated by P.J. Lynch, has been widely hailed as a true Christmas classic.

My mum bought this book the year it came out in 1995. It is a family classic now because of the tender message. Two families dealing with grief and hardship are brought together by wood carvings and kindness.

Talented woodworker Jonathan Toomey is gruff and bleak, taking little pleasure in his life after a tragic loss. When the widow McDowell and her seven-year-old son Thomas hire Toomey to carve a nativity, he begins to rediscover joy in his work and life again. This beautiful book stays with you long after the reading is over. It is a fabulous story of loss and healing, teaching and learning, and the quiet power of friendship to transform.

Yes, I get teary-eyed too when I read this one, but it's still one of my favorite Christmas stories.

A wonderful Christmas Story for the entire family-along with the DVD. We loved this book from a 3 year old to a 42 year old!

A beautifully illustrated story for the whole family that will probably become a yearly tradition-- and you'll need the Kleenex box nearby every time!

This is an exceptional children''s book that will be enjoyed by kids and any adults who get to read it. A touchy story, beautiful illustration bring to life a wood carver whose life is changed forever by the request of a widow and her son.
