The writer/director said he wrote this after he had a break up. It is sad that he used his efforts to produce a disturbing, sadistic and evil horror movie. A warning: Once you have seen it, you cannot remove the images from your head. We spent night after night watching comedies and happy cartoon movies to try to override the awful experience of watching this movie that had no redeeming character or side plots. We lasted till the end thinking there would be a plot change at the finale that would make it palatable. We should never have started the movie. It is not like a horror movie of aliens and monsters. We are talking evil human beings here. Forget culture or pretty scenery, this is sick and there is nothing to learn, or appreciate from it.

Waste of 2 hours. Scenery is the only good thing.

Disturbing, twisted, weird blatent - un-necessary sexual rituals, strange, bizarre waste of time. Don't waste time with this movie. I did NOT like this movie.

I found this movie to actually be disturbing. I think why I find the movie to be disturbing is for the fact this situation could actually exist in reality. The friend that everyone underestimates turns out to be the most dangerous one who plays everyone. The human sacrifices has been known to happen with all different cults and tribes throughout history. Some of the viking traditions. How the highly educated students are so caught up in their own selves that they do not even wonder why their friends that they went on a trip with just started to disappear. Everything about this movie I found actually disturbing as it can really exist and the elders used different plants as drugs. Like have you never heard of a rape drug? This movie is definitely an adult movie and should not be watched by youths or children. This is even the next day after watching the movie and I still find myself disturbed by it and I can watch about anything.

Very distorted. It’s not scary but sickening. If you read comments before watching, be aware that once you watch you cannot un-watch.

For me, this film failed in its execution of being terrifying or even scary. It makes me wonder if it was simply given the horror designation because the film had to be marketed with a genre in mind.

Some will like this, and I can definitely see why, but I suspect this film will leave many horror fans screaming with laughs instead of terror. If a horror film isn't scary, at least be unnerving. I didn't even get that feeling from this film. It utterly fails to build tension or even a sense of rising madness.

Final Verdict: Only watch this if you have a serious desire to do so. Your viewing experience may be enhanced with a group of friends and alcohol. Be warned that this feels like more of a college film class movie than a nail-biter.

This movie is a work of art.

Probably the worst and stupidest movie ever. On a scale of 1 (being the highest) to infinity, this would rank as infinity minus.
Makes the Swedes look like complete backwoods idiots, and the heroine ( a loosely used term) is a complete idiot.

Such a funny and immersive experience about a relationship that's run its course. Also, it made me wish I had a bunch of Swedish women to support me as we wail together in a circle.

The imagery in this film is absolutely breathtaking. I loved the visual effects and the vivid colours! It will definitely mess with your mind. Ari Aster is a horror genius.

This is an excellent horror movie by a new and innovative director. It is at times hard to watch and is extremely unsettling but it is a quality movie. It you rated it poorly you probably just didn’t get it.

Awful movie. I don’t like it. I think the director have some mental brain problem. That director should be not born at all. Cult is everywhere in real life. Awful.

I really liked this. A satisfying horror story about a girl that goes on a trip with a flaky boyfriend way too soon after a tragic loss. I really cared about this girl’s well being (hated her boyfriend) and generally felt fear on her behalf when the movie started to bear its fangs.
This is absolutely not a b-movie. It’s a fanatically produced, visually pleasing nightmare come true. Watch it!

Better than expected. I get why some people hated it though.
Could've been way better, but I thought it'd be worse.
Considering how much most movies suck, this was above average.

Brilliant pacing of the story and intensity. Beautiful cinematography and editing with the finest score for a horror film of this century.

Midsommar is a masterpiece of modern cinema! I loved the concept of a horror movie set in such a bright, idyllic place and I feel like Aster captured that image perfectly. The gore was incredibly graphic in this film, yet it was also something you just could not look away from. Viewing the intense scenes put me in the mind of the other characters, just as horrified and scared as they were. I also really loved the execution of the relationships, and how they related to the themes of family, trauma, and love. This whole movie felt like a psychedelic experience, especially with the vibrant colours, hazy plot, and violent ending. Overall, I loved this movie and would recommend it to anyone who is over 16 and is okay with viewing extremely graphic scenes. 5/5

An incredibly stupid and pointless movie.
Although it looks fairly high budget- it is actually without any story - it is- instead- a series of sensation based vignettes that become more and more pointless.

It seems to have been done by a director who has contempt for pagan culture and in the worst way possible - makes fun of it.
The Wicker man- from 1973- is a much better film with similar content of ancient Pagan themes- but instead has a story that is believable.
This movie is what happens when a hack director , with no real talent or originality -who obviously has hollywood connections ---- is allowed to make this piece of junk.
I have no idea why anyone would allow funding for such a mediocre movie.

??... Yikes
Literary one of the worst movies I have ever seen. Unlikable characters you can’t connect with that are all terrible people. All the characters are extremely annoying and dumb. Like it’s a cult, what did you expect. Very disturbing scene... Not even a horror movie though. Boring and just terrible. Annoying soundtrack. Bad soundtrack, characters, & plot = Worst movie ever. Like another comment I fell like I was slowly losing my intelligence by watching this movie. Don’t watch, unless you want to waste your life watching a horrible film. Can’t believe this is apparently one of the best 2019 films and horror movie films. Worst movie ever.

doyoureadme is spot on. Who thinks up this nonsense? The only reason I gave it one star is that the cinematography is fine. Skip it.

Great great film, enjoyed much - will leave the film school seminar to the other zillions commenting on this. An interesting phenomenon in itself, as the film appears to have generated much reaction. Be warned, this film requires an attention span.
