Tom Courtney plays Billy and Billy's imaginary personality, the first a rather failed young man, and the second, a highly successful personality. This requires Courtney to stretch his acting abilities to play two opposite personalities. I was a little disappointed that Julie Christie, in a very early role, was not a major character in the film.

This was John Schlesinger's second major film, which is an adaptation of the stage play starring Tom Courtenay recreating his told of Bill. In it's day it dealt with issues that are hardly controversial today. It's very precious and the dvd I saw had sub titles because the accents and slang are very thick Northern England. A curio.

I'm gonna try and write about this film without mentioning Walter Mitty. Oops...

The pointedly lackluster sets and grim West Yorkshire shooting locations that are somber in the extreme illustrate plainly the confines of a dull, drab life that fuels Billy’s dreams of alternatives. There's superb acting by all (Gwendolyn Watts I'm looking at you!) and the few scenes with Christie and Courtenay together are positively electric. Christie has the definitive line: "It's this town... I don't like knowing everybody, I don't like being a part of everything. What I want to be is invisible. I want to be able to move around without having to explain anything."
